Fun With The Fam At New York Aquarium

It’s kind of a tradition to take my nieces to Coney Island whenever they come to New York, but we’ve never taken them to the aquarium there. I don’t think I’ve ever been there, even on school trips, so this was an experience for all of us. The tickets were going for a temporarily discounted price, I think because of the new shark exhibit. Usually it’s just Bee and me when we go out exploring, but on this day my mom came with us and we all had a really fun time. I think Bee wanted to go on some of the rides, and my mom said she’d get her some tickets, but I think maybe she didn’t want to go alone. My mom and I hate heights and rides like rollercoasters, so we wouldn’t have been able to get on with her. Maybe if she comes to New York with my brother or my other niece, they can go on together.

These pictures were edited with Capture One, which I’m still getting used to. I’m really bummed that Aperture is acting up on me. I called tech support and they walked me through a fix that seemed to help for a while. I even uninstalled it and reinstalled it (as the tech guy said they might have me do if the other things he suggested didn’t work) and even that didn’t help. I’m sure it’s Aperture because my screen only does that quick red flicker if I move the mouse too fast, when I’m using Aperture. It doesn’t do that with any other program. I’ve used it since it came out and as someone who is not the biggest fan of change, this is a bit of a bummer for me. 😥

The first thing we did was stop and get something to eat. We got some food at a White Castle Express (don’t judge us! White Castle is delicious! 😆 ).  Once we regained some of our energy with food and something cold to drink, we continued on our way, strolling along the boardwalk and people watching.  A lot of people had their dogs with them, and as major dog lovers, Bee and I were saying “Awwwwwwww!!!” about every 10 seconds.

Whyyyyyyy? It was so hot that day. It’s been so hot every day. It’s summertime. How can he even stand to be in a hoodie? I was in a dress and I was sweating. Seeking some relief from the hot sun, my mom, Bee, and I decided that it would be a good time to go to the aquarium and check out the sharks.  I wanted to put the shark pics in a gallery view, but I didn’t have enough keepers, so it just looked weird in gallery view.

When you first walk into the room you see all the other exhibits. Kind of like the opening acts for the main band at a concert.

This is probably my favorite picture from inside. I love the silhouette of the woman on the left and how I was able to get both women, and the pictures on their phones, in the shot.

Except for the light coming from the tanks, the room was completely dark so the image quality isn’t the best, but it was a lot of fun to walk around and see the sharks, stingrays, and fish. It was so cute because a little boy (about 5) got really excited and said “Stingrays!!!!”, and his baby brother imitated him and said “stingrays!” I guess it was one of those “you had to be there” moments, but it was pretty adorable.  The last picture was a display that you see as soon as you walk out of the room of a small sample of the plastic and other garbage that’s been pulled from the water.

The sea lions were so cute. There was a huge crowd around their area of the aquarium but luckily mom, Bee, and I were able to get pretty close to the front and I was able to snap this picture. I posted a picture of the penguins on my Instagram, but I wasn’t able to get a good shot with my a7Rii.

We were all getting a bit tired so we decided to walk back along the boardwalk and head home. Everybody looked like they were having a lot of fun at the beach and it made me realize that it’s been years since I’ve been to the beach. When I went to South Carolina last year for my birthday, that was the first time I had gotten in a bathing suit in about 10 years! I love the water. Trying to find a one piece in a sea of barely there bikinis and then trying to not hunch over like an old lady when I’m in said one piece because I am not used to being in a bathing suit?  Not so much. 😆
